Indonesia loses the WTO case, and the government may increase the export tax on nickel mines

Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia’s Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordination Agency, delivered a speech on Indonesia’s failure in the WTO nickel ore export dispute.

Bahrir said that despite the loss, the government could implement many strategies to maintain the downstream nickel industry.

Bahrir said at the presidential palace in Jakarta last Wednesday: “I can’t go into details. This is the government’s strategy. All roads lead to Rome. They have 1000 ideas, and we have 2000 ideas. The Indonesian people are very smart. We can’t play anymore. We are not afraid.”

According to him, the possible strategy is to increase the export tax on nickel mines.

In fact, there is another way to prevent the export of nickel ore. He just didn’t want to reveal it.

He said: “There are other methods, but I don’t want to explain what other methods are. If I disclose it, my opponents will know. It is no longer the bullet we can fight against them.”

Previously, Indonesia had been sued by the EU to the WTO for banning the export of nickel ores. The export ban implemented since January 1, 2020 was protested by the European Union because it disrupted the production of their stainless steel industry.
