Indonesia lodged an appeal to the WTO against the EU’s failure in the nickel export ban
Reuters reported that Indonesia filed an appeal to the WTO on December 12 against the decision of the World Trade Organization (WTO) expert panel in the case of EU v. Indonesia on nickel export ban.
Indonesia is the largest nickel exporter in the world. In order to attract foreign businessmen to Indonesia to develop nickel smelters and downstream industries, and increase the added value of nickel industry, the government has banned nickel ore exports from the beginning of 2020.
The EU sued Indonesia to the WTO, saying that Indonesia’s export restrictions on raw materials unfairly damaged the EU’s stainless steel industry. The WTO issued a report on November 30 this year, ruling that Indonesia’s request to ban nickel exports and domestic processing violated WTO rules.
